01Dining, Nightlife & Weekends

Food, drink and going out

Pune eats earlier than Mumbai and goes to bed earlier than Bangalore, but the food is excellent.

There are old Irani and Parsi cafés in Camp and much-loved misal pav places across the old peths (the old city quarters). Koregaon Park has European-style cafés, and there is a wave of craft breweries around Balewadi. Pune has more good food than its size suggests.

Quieter Nights
Pune Sleeps Earlier
Most restaurant kitchens close by 11pm and nightlife is gentler than Mumbai or Bangalore, though online food delivery (Swiggy, Zomato) runs late, often until around 1am in KP, Kalyani Nagar and Balewadi. A feature of Pune, not a bug.
Society Life
Housing Society Culture
Your building's WhatsApp group is your first community. Co-op housing societies manage buildings collectively, getting on good terms with your Society Secretary makes life considerably easier from day one.
Festival Calendar
Plan Around Ganpati
Ganesh Chaturthi (August/September) is Pune's defining 11-day festival, Pune is where the public Ganpati tradition was popularised. Old city traffic is paralysed during Visarjan. Plan your first August around it, embrace, don't fight.
Heritage Cafés
Camp's Parsi Quarter
Vohuman Café, Marz-O-Rin, Café Goodluck, Café Diamond Queen, Dorabjee & Sons, Kayani, Pune's Parsi and Irani café heritage runs deep and parallels Mumbai's. The history is visible in every menu and every chequered tablecloth.

02Local Language Guide

Marathi words that help

Pune is the cultural capital of Marathi, even more than Mumbai. Hindi is widely understood, and English is spoken everywhere in IT, education and business, but Marathi is the city's own language. Punekars are proud of their Marathi heritage, so even a few phrases win a warm welcome from your neighbours, building staff and shop owners.

नमस्कार
Greeting
Namaskar
The formal Marathi greeting. Use with your Society Secretary, landlord, building staff, or local shop owners. Far more respectful and locally appropriate than a Hindi “namaste” in Pune, it signals you have arrived with intent.
कसा आहेस?
How Are You
Kasa aahes? / Kashi aahes?
How are you? (male / female). The response, “Theek aahe” (I'm fine), is always appreciated. Exchange this with your kirana shop owner, building guard, or chaiwala for an immediate human connection that makes Pune feel like home faster.
धन्यवाद
Thanks
Dhanyawad
Thank you in Marathi. Much more impactful than the Hindi “shukriya” or English “thanks” in a Pune context. Your auto-rickshaw driver, building guard, or pao-wallah at Bedekar Misal will remember you for using it.
माझं नाव ___ आहे
Introduction
Maaza naav ___ aahe
My name is ___. Pair with “Tumcha naav kay?” (What is your name?) for a simple introduction. Used at the building lobby, with your housekeeper, or with anyone you'll see daily.
कृपया
Please
Krupaya
Please. Use with requests, “Please open the door” / “Please bring water.” Pune is a polite city; Marathi formal markers like “krupaya” carry weight here.
माफ करा
Sorry
Maaf kara
Sorry / excuse me. The all-purpose apology, for bumping someone on a crowded FC Road pavement, for being late to a Marathi friend's home, for any minor social misstep. Universally accepted.
किती झालं?
How Much
Kiti zaale?
How much? Essential for auto-rickshaw fares, Laxmi Road shopping, and bargaining. Pune autos are historically more honest with meters than Mumbai or Delhi, but asking in Marathi shifts the dynamic in your favour.
कुठे आहे?
Where Is It
Kuthe aahe?
Where is it? “FC Road kuthe aahe?”, Where is FC Road? Useful when navigating old city peths where Google Maps occasionally surrenders to one-way lanes and informal landmarks.
मस्त
Praise
Mast / Khup changle
Great / very good. “Mast aahe”, that's great. Casual praise that fits anywhere from a Misal Pav at Bedekar to a Sawai Gandharva concert. Marathi speakers will smile when an expat uses it correctly.
मला मराठी येत नाही
Honesty
Mala Marathi yet naahi
I don't speak Marathi. The honest admission, used after attempting a few phrases. Marathi speakers respond with warmth and switch to Hindi or English, often offering an unprompted Marathi lesson on the spot.
पुणेकर
Identity
Punekar
A person from Pune. The local identity carries real pride, Punekars are famously precise about traffic, time, and their city's intellectual heritage. Calling yourself a “wannabe Punekar” earns instant goodwill at any dinner table.
मिसळ
Food
Misal
The Pune dish, a sprouts curry with farsan and pav, eaten morning or afternoon. Bedekar, Shree Upahar, Katakirr, Ramnath, and Vaishali all claim the throne. Ask any Punekar where they go and you'll start a 20-minute debate.
रिक्षा
Transit
Auto / Riksha
Auto-rickshaw, the Pune workhorse. Metered, generally honest. Negotiate a polite fare in Marathi at peak hours when meters run “off.” “Bhau / Tai, meter laao” (brother / sister, put the meter on) is the universal request.
जुगाड
Philosophy
Jugaad
The resourceful Indian improvisation mindset, a workaround, a creative fix that probably shouldn't work but does. Essential vocabulary for navigating Pune's traffic, bureaucracy, and Hinjewadi commute combinations.

03Weekend Escapes

Weekend trips

Pune sits on the Deccan Plateau, with the Sahyadri hills just to the west and the Konkan coast within reach.

How far

Ten escapes by the hours this guide gives from Pune. Tap one to read about it.

Lonavala & Khandala, 1 hr; Sinhagad Fort, 1 hr; Mahabaleshwar & Panchgani, 3.5 hrs; Tamhini Ghat & Mulshi, 2 hrs; Kolad, 2.5 hrs; Mumbai, 3 hrs; Matheran, 2.5 hrs; Igatpuri, 2.5 hrs; Nashik & Sula Vineyards, 3.5 hrs; Konkan Beaches, 2.5-5 hrs.

That gives it some of the best weekend trips in India. There are hill stations and waterfalls in the monsoon, and Shivaji-era forts all year. In winter there is the Konkan strawberry country, and Mumbai is three hours west when you want a different city.

1 hr by road
Lonavala & Khandala
Pune's classic weekend escape, twin hill stations on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway at 600m. Bhushi Dam, Tiger Point, Lonavala Lake, and the Karla & Bhaja Buddhist caves (2nd century BCE) are essential stops. Monsoon transforms the ghats into spectacular waterfalls. Chikki shops are an institution, bring boxes home for colleagues.
