FRRO Registration · Pune
FRRO Registration Deadlines are Non-Negotiable
If your visa carries a registration endorsement (employment, student and dependant visas usually do), FRRO registration within 14 days of arrival is mandatory and legally binding. Other long-stay visa holders must register before completing 180 days in India; when in doubt, treat 14 days as the deadline. Non-registration can escalate beyond fines to criminal penalties (up to 3 years' imprisonment and/or a ₹3 lakh fine). Do not prioritise property hunting or school visits over FRRO registration. IKAN coordinates your FRRO registration as Day 3-4 immediately on your arrival, before everything else.

Relocating with Pets
Cats and dogs can be brought to Pune with planning. You will need an import permit from the Animal Quarantine & Certification Service (AQCS), a recent veterinary health certificate and up-to-date vaccinations (rabies included) from your origin country, and microchip identification. India generally permits a limited number of pets per passenger as accompanied baggage or manifest cargo, confirm your airline's live-animal and crate rules early. Safety & Inclusion: Pune is widely regarded as one of India's safer, more relaxed large cities for women, including after dark in the well-lit central and IT-corridor neighbourhoods, though, as anywhere, take normal precautions late at night and prefer app-cabs (Ola/Uber) to unmarked autos when travelling solo. Save the Women Helpline (1091) and Police (100) before you need them. LGBTQ+: same-sex relationships are legal in India and Pune's cosmopolitan KP / Kalyani Nagar circles are comparatively open, though same-sex marriage is not yet recognised and attitudes are more conservative outside these pockets. Accessibility: newer malls, premium hospitals and Metro stations are largely step-free and wheelchair-accessible, while older peths, footpaths and heritage sites can be uneven, ask buildings about lifts and ramps when shortlisting a home.

Life in Pune
Pune eats earlier than Mumbai and sleeps earlier than Bangalore. The trade-off is real, but so is the food. About Your Airports
Pune International (PNQ) at Lohegaon handles ~10M passengers annually, comprehensive domestic, limited international (primarily Gulf). 10 km / 15 to 25 min from Koregaon Park. For long-haul international travel, most expats use Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) Terminal 2, accessed by road on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, or the new Navi Mumbai International Airport (~2-2.5 hour drive from Pune). Many Pune residents simply book through-tickets with a Mumbai connection. The proposed Purandar International Airport remains in planning as of 2026.
Transport & Metro
Getting around Pune
Pune Metro is now operational, the biggest infrastructure upgrade in the city's history. The Purple Line (PCMC-Swargate) and Aqua Line (Vanaz-Ramwadi) are running, with the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar line (Line 3) in its final stage and opening expected mid-2026. Surface transport, autos, Ola/Uber, and PMPML buses, fills every other corridor (note: app-based bike taxis are currently not permitted in Maharashtra). Many expats employ a personal driver for daily commutes.
Pune Metro Lines (2026)
Purple Line, PCMC to Swargate
~17 km. Elevated through Pimpri-Chinchwad with underground section through Shivajinagar and Civil Court down to Swargate. Connects the PCMC industrial belt to central Pune. Fully operational by 2026 across the full alignment.
Aqua Line, Vanaz to Ramwadi
~14 km elevated east-west line through Kothrud, Deccan, Pune Junction, Yerwada, Ramwadi. Operational. Civil Court is the interchange with the Purple Line, making most premium Pune neighbourhoods accessible by Metro for the first time.
Line 3, Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar (PMRDA)
~23 km PPP project (Line 3) in its final stage of construction, opening expected mid-2026 with some sections phasing to late 2026; Civil Court is its interchange with the Purple and Aqua lines. When complete, this will be the single most important transport upgrade for Hinjewadi IT executives, a sub-30-minute ride to central Pune that currently takes 60 to 90 minutes by road during peak.

The default for many expat families. A full-time driver (₹15,000-25,000/month) removes the stress of Pune traffic and parking, arranged via your building.
PMPML Buses
Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) runs the city bus network. BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit) corridors on key arterials. The "Chalo" app gives live tracking.
Driving & Licences
Visitors may drive on a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) with their home licence for up to a year after arrival. For longer stays, convert to an Indian licence at the RTO (IDP/home licence, passport, visa, FRRO and address proof). Traffic is assertive and lane discipline loose, most expat families prefer a hired driver.
Hinjewadi Traffic Reality: Pune's main pain point. The Mumbai Highway / Wakad junction at peak hours (8-10am into Hinjewadi, 6-9pm out) can add 60 minutes to any journey. Many IT employers run company shuttles from premium residential pockets (Aundh, Baner, Wakad) to mitigate. The PMRDA Hinjewadi Metro line, when complete, will be the genuine solution. Until then, employing a personal driver and adjusting your start time are the working strategies.

This is Pune's defining advantage. Sitting at 560 metres on the Deccan Plateau, Pune offers a climate no other major Indian metro matches, cool dry winters, warm dry summers without coastal humidity, and a manageable monsoon at one-fourth Mumbai's rainfall. ~700mm in four months, about a quarter of Mumbai's monsoon, falling mostly in afternoon and evening showers. Temperatures drop to a pleasant 22-28°C. The drive west to Tamhini Ghat, Mulshi, and Lonavala becomes one of the great seasonal experiences in India. Pune's drainage handles most rainfall, though older peths near the Mutha river can flood briefly in extreme spells.

Pune rewards preparation. These are the realities every incoming expat deserves to know before signing anything or forming firm expectations.
Hinjewadi Peak-Hour Traffic
The Mumbai Highway / Wakad junction approach to Hinjewadi Phases 1, 2 and 3 is Pune's defining infrastructure pain. A 12 km journey can take 75 to 90 minutes at peak hours (8-10am inbound, 6-9pm outbound). The PMRDA Metro Line 3, opening mid-2026, will ease this, until then, choose your neighbourhood with the commute in mind, and use company shuttles where possible.
Limited Direct International Flights
Pune's airport (PNQ) is comprehensive for domestic but limited for international, primarily Gulf hubs. For US, Europe, East Asia, Australia connections you will route via Mumbai CSMIA, with the new Navi Mumbai International Airport (~2-2.5 hour drive from Pune) now an additional option. Build the onward road journey into your travel plans. Many expats simply book through-tickets connecting at CSMIA T2.

Old City Flooding in Extreme Monsoon
Pune's monsoon is much milder than Mumbai's, but old peths near the Mutha and Mula rivers can flood briefly during extreme rainfall events. Check flood history before renting in low-lying central Pune locations. KP, Kalyani Nagar, Aundh, Baner, Magarpatta, Hinjewadi townships, modern premium pockets, handle monsoon well.
Winter Air Quality Spikes
Pune's air quality is generally better than Delhi or Mumbai, but November-December can see AQI spikes driven by temperature inversions, post-Diwali fireworks residue, and crop-burning particulates drifting south. HEPA air purifiers are useful for families with young children. Premium developments with managed indoor air handle this well.

FRRO Registration (know your deadline)
IKAN coordinates your FRRO registration within your window: 14 days of arrival for endorsement-carrying visas (most employment and dependant visas), before 180 days for other long-stay visas. Typically scheduled Day 3-4 of your arrival. Complete the online application at indianfrro.gov.in first, registration is usually a digital application with no physical visit required, though FRRO may occasionally require an in-person verification. Bring passport, visa, rental agreement, and 4 passport photos. Your FRRO acknowledgment is required for PAN, banking, school admissions, and future visa renewals.

Bring passport and visa to any Jio or Airtel store. Both offer eSIM in Pune. SIM activation takes 4 to 24 hours. Your Indian mobile number unlocks every downstream registration, get it set up as soon as possible after landing.

Apply via the NSDL portal (tin-nsdl.com) immediately after your FRRO acknowledgment. Required for banking, investments, salary credits, and tax compliance. Takes 10-15 working days. Aadhaar is not required for foreign nationals, PAN alone is your financial identity in India.
